Abstract
This article examines the relationship between pediatric obesity and the severity of viral respiratory infections, specifically influenza A virus (IAV) and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). While obesity is a recognized risk factor for severe influenza and COVID-19 outcomes in adults, evidence in children is less consistent for influenza but more convincing for COVID-19, where pediatric obesity is linked to increased severity, intensive care admission, respiratory support, and Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C). The article highlights that chronic low-grade inflammation ("meta-inflammation") and altered innate immune responses in children with obesity may contribute to these severe outcomes, though precise mechanisms remain unclear. It emphasizes the importance of vaccination and targeted public health strategies for children with obesity, noting that vaccine responses may differ in this group and that further research is needed to optimize prevention and management.
