Abstract

The article focuses on a study examining the cognitive effects of artificial intelligence (AI) use in the workplace, identifying a phenomenon termed “AI brain fry,” defined as mental fatigue from excessive use or oversight of AI tools beyond one’s cognitive capacity. The study of 1,488 U.S.-based full-time workers found that intensive AI oversight and increased workload due to AI contribute to significant cognitive strain, including difficulty focusing, slower decision-making, and headaches, which correlate with higher error rates, decision fatigue, and increased employee turnover intentions. Conversely, using AI to replace routine or repetitive tasks was associated with reduced burnout, highlighting a distinction between acute cognitive fatigue and emotional exhaustion.
