Abstract

Monirul Islam's book, "Oriental Wells: The Early Romantic Poets and Their Eastern Muse," explores the influence of the Orient on British Romantic poets. Islam argues that the imagined East, created in the wake of imperial rule, both inspired and caused anxiety for the Romantics. The book examines the Oriental Tale, the Oriental Gothic, and the work of William Jones as sources of inspiration for the poets. While the book makes a valid claim, it lacks a strong thesis and original insight, relying heavily on secondary sources. Additionally, it tends to reinforce a dated view of Romanticism as a Western male prerogative and overlooks certain contexts for Romantic orientalism. [Extracted from the article]
