Abstract

Criminology of the ridiculous man: There is no evidence to suggest that Cesare Beccaria's ideas directly influenced Fyodor Dostoevsky's novels; however, the thematic connection between the two authors is undeniable. Ironically, both writers explore 'crime and punishment' in their works, yet their perspectives diverge significantly. Beccaria's utilitarianism is met with criticism from Dostoevsky's characters, who are frequently depicted as unhappy, alienated, and ridiculous. By examining controversies surrounding criminal justice through the thoughts and actions of his characters, Dostoevsky not only challenges Beccaria's rational philosophy but also raises 'damned' questions about the nature of crime and the purposes of punishment, thereby enriching contemporary critical criminological discourse.
