Abstract

This comprehensive report surveys 2022 scholarship on Old English language and literature, focusing on manuscript studies, prose, poetry, and reception. Manuscript studies explore material, theoretical, and literary analyses of key texts and artifacts, including the Old English Solomon and Saturn dialogues, the Exeter Book, and runic inscriptions, highlighting scribal practices and textual transmission. Prose scholarship addresses Old English translations, hagiography, legal texts, and medical writings, with significant attention to Ælfric's works, Anglo-Saxon law, and cultural interactions reflected in texts like the Old English Soliloquies and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Beowulf studies feature new monographs and essays examining its historical context, literary themes, performance, and metrics, alongside analyses of other heroic and lyric poems that engage with identity, emotion, and environment. Reception studies consider modern engagements with Old English, including medievalism, translation, and cultural politics, addressing issues such as Anglo-Saxonism and the influence of Tolkien. The report reflects diverse methodological approaches and interdisciplinary perspectives relevant to researchers in medieval English studies.
