Abstract
The article explores the intimate and complex meanings of Psalm 23, emphasizing the personal name Yahweh as "my shepherd" and challenging simplistic interpretations of its promises. It acknowledges that faith does not guarantee a life free from hardship, poverty, or suffering, but highlights the psalm’s portrayal of God’s presence especially in "the valley of shadow," where God is closest despite being unseen. The psalmist’s depiction of God’s goodness and mercy is described as actively pursuing believers, transforming hardship into renewal, rather than offering mere passive forgiveness. The article also reflects on the ancient cultural practice of anointing guests with oil as a symbol of extravagant welcome, illustrating God’s lavish hospitality toward followers.
