Abstract
This collection focuses on the reception history and adaptations of the Old English epic *Beowulf* for children, examining how the text has been remade through picture books, illustrated storybooks, and youth novels. It traces adaptations from the early 19th century, including N.F.S. Grundtvig's Danish translation and early English versions, through mid-20th-century reinterpretations and contemporary thematic analyses. The volume explores issues such as the portrayal of femininity, narrative perspective, cultural variations in heroism, animal-centered retellings, and J.R.R. Tolkien's influence on modern adaptations. By challenging assumptions that children's versions are merely simplified, the work highlights how these adaptations offer new insights into the original poem and contribute to its ongoing scholarly reception.
