Abstract

This article focuses on Hulu's adaptation of *The Testaments*, the sequel to Margaret Atwood's *The Handmaid's Tale*, highlighting its shift toward a young-adult (YA) coming-of-age narrative set within the dystopian theocracy of Gilead. The series centers on Agnes MacKenzie, a privileged "Plum" daughter of a Commander, and Daisy, a secret agent infiltrating Gilead, exploring themes of female oppression, rebellion, and moral complexity from the perspective of elite young women. Unlike its predecessor, which became criticized for repetitive and graphic depictions of violence, *The Testaments* employs teen drama elements and nuanced character development to offer a brighter, more varied story that balances the bleakness of Gilead with moments of friendship and personal growth. The adaptation retains some inconsistencies with the original book and prior series seasons but introduces fresh perspectives on power, complicity, and resistance within a patriarchal regime.
