Abstract

The article discusses Thomas Jefferson's lifelong entanglement with slavery and race, showing how he simultaneously denounced the institution as immoral while upholding and benefiting from it, and how his personal relationships with enslaved people—especially the Hemings family. Topics include Jefferson's Enlightenment-influenced gradualism, his racial theories and political calculations, and the disjunction between his public pronouncements and private practices.
