Abstract

The article focuses on a proslavery crisis of confidence in U.S. federalism between 1850 and 1860. The author discusses the implementation of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act, explores how slaveholders understood their relationship with the central government, and examines how the handling of fugitive slave cases pushed Southerners toward secession.
