Abstract
106If The Night Watch had been painted by Rothko the platoon of soldiers taking up their positions would be a charcoal haze, and in the lower half of the large canvas where the elegant cavalier in yellow finery and high leather boots stands we would see a layer of cornflower and gold. The young girl in the foreground with the dead chicken around her belt would be ivory and green, the drum of the drummer on the right a shimmer, and through the washes we might make him out if we listened hard enough for the drumbeat.
