Abstract

This article focuses on Emerald Fennell's loose adaptation of Emily Brontë's 1847 novel *Wuthering Heights*, which reimagines the character Isabella Linton. Unlike the original portrayal of Isabella as a pampered and abused sister coerced into a loveless marriage, Fennell's version presents her as a shy, sexually repressed ward who evolves into a willing and even empowered participant in a dark, submissive relationship with Heathcliff. The adaptation notably alters Isabella's relationship with Edgar Linton, making him her guardian rather than her brother, and introduces a more complex, unsettling dynamic that contrasts with the novel's depiction of her victimhood.
