Abstract

The article explores the relationship between lexicography and language planning, using the fourth edition of The Standard Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese (SDCC4) as a case study. SDCC4 was created to enforce language policies set by the National Language Commission of China and aims to adhere to national norms and standards of the Chinese language. However, it has received less attention compared to the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (CCD). The article examines the pronunciation and character forms included in SDCC4, noting its adherence to national standards but also highlighting limitations and alternatives provided by CCD7. Overall, SDCC4 aims to promote the norms and standards of contemporary Chinese and contribute to the diverse development of the Chinese-language dictionary market. [Extracted from the article]
