Abstract

The article focuses on early press coverage and community responses to Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr’s founding of Hull House, a pioneering settlement house established in Chicago’s Nineteenth Ward in 1889. It details how local newspapers highlighted Addams’s dedication to improving the moral and physical conditions of impoverished immigrant communities, especially Italian residents, through educational, recreational, and social programs. The text also describes Hull House’s development into a multifaceted institution offering playgrounds, clubs, classes, and cultural events, and notes its later recognition as a National Historic Landmark and Chicago Landmark. Additionally, the article references the ongoing legacy of Hull House’s social work and its eventual closure in 2012 after more than a century of community service.
