Abstract
This article focuses on a detailed personal account of encounters with wild feral ponies and longhorn cattle in the Mount Rogers High Country of southwestern Virginia, particularly around Wilburn Ridge and Pine Mountain along the Appalachian Trail. The wild ponies, a Scottish mix bred in the 1940s to survive harsh winters, live in a complex relationship with humans, marked by both curiosity and caution, as visitors are advised not to feed or approach them due to their unpredictable behavior. The narrative explores themes of wilderness, ferality, and human interaction with animals in protected yet managed landscapes, highlighting the tension between the ponies’ wild nature and their status as livestock subject to periodic roundups and auctions. The author reflects on solitude, nature’s challenges, and the emotional resonance of these encounters amid the rugged, remote terrain. [Extracted from the article]
