Abstract

The recent excavation of an elaborate bathhouse in Pompeii reveals that for wealthy ancient Romans, bathing was a social activity. The bathhouse had 4 separate rooms and could host up to 30 guests, showcasing the luxury enjoyed by the elite. The bath experience included undressing in a change room, lounging in a hot bath, having oil rubbed into the skin, and cooling off in a deep pool surrounded by columns and frescoes. The luxury of Roman baths was made possible by the labor of slaves who worked in unbearably hot conditions to maintain the facilities. [Extracted from the article]
