Abstract

Michael K. Johnson's book, "Speculative Wests: Popular Representations of a Region and Genre," explores how the Western genre has evolved and transformed through hybrid forms and speculative work. Johnson examines how artists of color have used these new forms to challenge the centrality of whiteness in the Western and imagine alternative visions. The book focuses on works by African Americans, Indigenous people, and people of color, using a variety of texts and media to highlight the genre's ideological gaps and omissions. Johnson's analysis also considers the political context of the Trump presidency and recent social and cultural divisions. Ultimately, the book offers hope for a more inclusive and humane future for the Western genre. [Extracted from the article]
