Abstract

This article analyzes Amitav Ghosh's fictional work *The Living Mountain: A Fable of Our Times* as a serious narrative addressing the Anthropocene and advocating for a transition to the Symbiocene, a proposed sustainable epoch based on mutualism and symbiosis between humans and nature. Drawing on feminist bioethics—particularly concepts of embodiment, care, vulnerability, and dependence—the article highlights how Indigenous-like practices in the fable exemplify ethical, non-dualist human–nature relationships that contrast with exploitative capitalist colonial attitudes symbolized by the Anthropocene. The fable critiques human domination over nature and underscores the urgency of adopting care ethics and collective responsibility to achieve climate justice and ecological harmony. It positions bioethical narratives and serious fiction as vital tools for fostering ethical reflection and promoting a symbiotic ethos necessary for a livable future.
