Abstract

"Dialect, Voice, and Identity in Chinese Translation" by Jing Yu explores the translation of English dialects in classic literary works into Chinese, focusing on characters' identities and social hierarchies. The study analyzes 277 Chinese translations of "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," "Tess of the d'Urbervilles," and "Pygmalion" over 90 years, revealing strategies used by translators to represent Dorset dialect, African American Vernacular English, and cockney. Through case studies, the book demonstrates how dialect translation influences the construction of characters' identities and reflects cultural negotiations between source and target texts.
