Abstract

The article analyzes Rose Terry Cooke's antebellum fairy tale "Maya, the Princess" as a revision of Sleeping Beauty that allegorizes the nineteenth-century marriage market and Victorian anxieties about feminine virtue, desire, and courtship. Topics include the reworking of Grimm and Andersen fairy-tale traditions; the "Spark" as a metaphor for sexual desire and moral danger in women; and Cooke's endorsement of Christian domesticity as protection against masculine violence.
