Abstract
This article analyzes the concept of influence in relation to Jorge Luis Borges's short story "The Garden of Forking Paths," focusing primarily on the direct philosophical influence of English philosopher F. H. Bradley's 1893 metaphysical essay *Appearance and Reality*, which introduced the idea of parallel, independent time-series. Borges appropriated Bradley's hypothesis to develop a labyrinthine, non-linear conception of time central to the story, where multiple temporal paths coexist and diverge, anticipating later interpretations of the multiverse in quantum mechanics. The article also situates Borges's work within a broader "universe of the encyclopedia," reflecting the complexity and limitations of human knowledge and classification, and discusses literary devices such as the symbolic use of the full moon to create verisimilitude. Finally, it addresses the challenges and nuances of tracing direct literary influences, noting that Borges's syncretic approach complicates simplistic attributions and that his work exemplifies the interplay of ideas across disciplines and time.
