Abstract

This article focuses on the recent release of *Melodies of the Weary Blues*, a picture book anthology by HarperCollins that revisits Langston Hughes's 1926 poetry collection *The Weary Blues* with illustrations by 23 Black artists. Edited by illustrator Shamar Knight-Justice, the anthology aims to introduce Hughes's work to young readers by emphasizing themes such as music, nature, longing, and Black cultural appreciation. Contributors like award-winning artist Frank Morrison highlight resilience and freedom in their interpretations, seeking to provide positive representations of African American experiences. The project received support from Hughes's estate and is positioned as a culturally significant work amid ongoing challenges to Black history education.
