Abstract

This essay analyzes Kevin Hood Gary's book *Why Boredom Matters*, focusing on the interplay between boredom, leisure, selfhood, and education through Aristotelian and existentialist perspectives. Gary argues that modern schools often respond to student boredom with distractions or forced endurance rather than fostering meaningful engagement or self-cultivation, emphasizing leisure as a moral and intellectual virtue that restores the self. He distinguishes between situational boredom, a temporary loss of interest, and existential boredom, a deeper sense of meaninglessness, advocating for contemplative practices and sustained attention as antidotes. Drawing on philosophical traditions from Aristotle to existentialists like Kierkegaard and Heidegger, Gary proposes that leisure involves a receptive, transformative engagement with experience that counters disenchantment. The book concludes with educational implications, urging teachers to cultivate students’ capacity for sustained attention and interiority rather than relying on superficial stimulation.
