Abstract

This article focuses on the life of Delinthus "Stump" Stackpole, a physically large but taciturn young man from Port William who, despite early social challenges, became a skilled and respected farmer. Raised in relative isolation, Stump struggled with speech but gradually learned to communicate, especially as he sought a wife, ultimately courting Kizzie Jones, a strong and well-regarded local woman. Their courtship, marked by Stump’s earnest efforts to overcome his reticence, led to marriage and a family that maintained the farm and traditions of Port William. Over time, their children left for opportunities beyond the farm, and the Stackpole name eventually disappeared from the community. The narrative highlights themes of personal growth, community ties, and the transition from rural to modern life.
