Enlightening the Minds or Reinforcing the Stereotypes?

Abstract

The article discusses the 1926-1927 global travel-study journey known as The Floating University, which aimed to provide experiential learning for academic credit to U.S. educators and students. The book presents a complex narrative of the journey, highlighting conflicts of interest, ethical controversies, and the struggle over knowledge authority and credentials control in the 1910s and 1920s. The students' experiences during the travel study reinforced Western/U.S. imperialist mindsets and stereotypes of Asian cultures, despite the program's goal of promoting cultural understanding.
