Abstract

The article reviews four significant 2024 contributions to plastic theory/studies, highlighting the concept of plasticity as a critical interdisciplinary notion spanning biology, literature, philosophy, and cultural studies. Kylie Crane’s *Concrete and Plastic* explores the intertwined materialities of plastic and concrete, emphasizing their relational and temporal scales rather than discrete objects. Antonine Nicoglou’s *Plasticity in the Life Sciences* analyzes plasticity as a boundary concept in biology, revealing its epistemological ambiguity and its role in articulating the limits between life and non-life, form and matter. Ranjan Ghosh’s *Plastic Tagore* examines the plasticity in Rabindranath Tagore’s literary and philosophical work, focusing on transformation, moral tension, and the agonistic nature of identity and creativity. Tobias L. Barnett’s article on Catherine Malabou’s historical epistemology addresses the limits of plasticity through the lens of epigenesis, history, and teleology, emphasizing the political and future-oriented potential of plasticity while cautioning against reductionist and teleological tendencies. Together, these works underscore plasticity’s role as a dynamic, surface-level phenomenon that mediates change across diverse domains without fixed finality.
