Abstract

A literary criticism of the novels "Beloved," by Toni Morrison, "Their Eyes Were Watching God," by Zora Neale Hurston and "The Color Purple," by Alice Walker is presented. It examines the historic progression of violence and its effect on the lives of African American women highlighted in these novels, the plots and characters in the novels, and the physical and sexual violence experienced by African American women during the slavery era.
