Abstract

The article focuses on the increasing replacement of the pursuit of objective truth by political advocacy in management research and academia. It argues that advocacy-driven approaches, particularly politically based advocacy, undermine critical thinking, scientific rigor, and the professional development of management as a discipline. Examples include controversies surrounding diversity statements in academic hiring, the American Psychological Association’s stance on race and gender, and incidents of "cancel culture" targeting scholars who present data-driven but politically uncomfortable findings. The author emphasizes the importance of maintaining a commitment to objective truth, critical inquiry, and individual responsibility in scholarly work, cautioning against the dominance of advocacy that prioritizes winning over truth.
