Abstract

This article examines the original tragic endings of Danish author Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales, contrasting them with the more optimistic adaptations commonly presented to children, such as Disney’s versions. Andersen’s stories, including “The Little Mermaid,” often conclude with themes of suffering and self-sacrifice, reflecting his belief that personal growth and empathy arise from hardship rather than idealized happy endings. The article highlights Danish cultural attitudes toward discussing difficult topics with children, emphasizing realistic expectations as a key to emotional resilience. It also provides biographical context on Andersen’s life and creative intentions, noting that his original tales convey complex human experiences rather than simple fairy-tale resolutions.
