Abstract

Svetlana Evdokimova's book, "Staging Existence: Chekhov's Tetralogy," explores the profound connection between Chekhov the thinker and Chekhov the artist. Evdokimova argues that Chekhov's distrust of system and abstraction aligns him with the existential tradition in philosophy. The book provides historical and philosophical contexts that connect Chekhov to thinkers such as Dostoevsky, Shestov, Heidegger, and Camus. Evdokimova emphasizes Chekhov's exploration of the void and the coping strategies his characters employ in the face of its realization. While the book offers valuable insights, it may overlook the emotional depth and complexity of Chekhov's characters, flattening their experiences and relationships. Nonetheless, the book presents Chekhov as a valuable antidote to polarized societies and highlights his commitment to unglamorous work and mental vigilance. [Extracted from the article]
