Petrushevskaya recalls her experience in an orphanage in Bashkiria, her mother becoming mentally ill, and how she lost her faith in the Soviet system. She tells about her study of journalism at Moscow State University in Russia, her efforts to publish stories and write fiction and the response of editors to her work, her writing of the play "Music Lessons" and publication of the book "Immortal Love."
