Abstract

This article reviews a Chandos recording featuring Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 3, Pan & Syrinx, and Flute Concerto, performed by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra under Edward Gardner with flutist Adam Walker. The review highlights Gardner’s generally brisk tempos, noting the orchestra’s ability to maintain clarity and detail without sounding rushed, though it suggests the trombones could be more prominent at times. Adam Walker’s performance of the technically demanding Flute Concerto is praised, though the comedic interplay between flute and bass trombone could be more pronounced. Pan & Syrinx is described as eerie and varied, with notable solos and orchestral intensity. The recording is recommended as a valuable addition for those interested in Nielsen’s works, though not essential for those with existing strong versions.
