Abstract
The article focuses on Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi's experience reading Margaret Atwood's novel *The Handmaid's Tale* while imprisoned for challenging Iran's enforcement of gender apartheid, a system of dress codes and coercive control by a theocratic male authority. Mohammadi, sentenced to 16 years, won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize during her incarceration and was later granted a three-week medical leave, during which she engaged with the Nobel committee, media, and Atwood through PEN America. The article highlights the symbolic connection between Atwood's fictional portrayal of oppression and Mohammadi's real-life struggle under Iran's regime.
