Abstract

The article presents a literary criticism of the 1892 novel "Iola Leroy," by African American author Frances E. W. Harper. Topics discussed include the way the novel chronicles the experiences of African Americans during the American Civil War, the depiction of slavery, the emancipation process, and the challenges faced by African American soldiers during the war, and observations on the use of African American dialect and phrases by Harper.
