Abstract
This slow burn isn't a typical murder mystery, but rather a philosophical folktale turned thriller that examines the state of animal welfare - and the lengths one will go to lend voice to the voiceless. Originally published in Poland in 2009, Nobel laureate Tokarczuk's novel (translated by Antonia Lloyd-Jones) follows Janina, a recluse in a remote Polish village who looks after homes left unoccupied in winter. When her neighbors start turning up dead, Janina stokes a theory that local wild animals are exacting revenge on those who hunt them. [Extracted from the article]
