Abstract

This article focuses on a series of banned book writing prompts inspired by Sandra Cisneros's novel *The House on Mango Street*, used to engage students in exploring themes of place, identity, and community. It reflects on teaching the book during remote learning, highlighting parallels between the students' experiences of confinement and the novel's narrator, Esperanza, who dreams of leaving her restrictive environment while acknowledging her ties to it. The prompts encourage students to write about emotionally resonant places, the meaning of their names, and the characterization of laughter, drawing on Cisneros's distinctive literary style. The article also discusses the cultural significance of *The House on Mango Street* as a vital representation of Chicana adolescence and the impact of attempts to ban such works.
