Abstract

This review focuses on Michael C. Finke’s 2021 biography *Freedom from Violence and Lies: Anton Chekhov’s Life and Writings*, which offers a nuanced retelling of the Russian playwright and author Anton Chekhov’s life through close analysis of his literary works. Rather than unveiling new archival discoveries, Finke integrates Chekhov’s well-known biography with detailed readings of both famous and lesser-known texts, highlighting recurring themes such as slavishness, fatherlessness, and voyeurism. The biography is noted for its original interpretations, particularly of *The Seagull*, and for presenting Chekhov as a humane figure whose life deeply informed his art. Finke’s work is positioned as an accessible and insightful resource for readers seeking a comprehensive understanding of Chekhov’s literary career and personal history.
