Abstract

Emmanuel Destenay's book, "Shadows from the Trenches: Veterans of the Great War and the Irish Revolution (1918-1923)," explores the role of British Army First World War veterans in the Irish Revolution. The book argues that former British Army service personnel played a significant role in the Irish Republican Army's campaign, but there was no deliberate targeting of British Army veterans by the IRA simply because of their previous service. The book also examines the involvement of veterans in the National Army of the Irish Free State. Destenay's analysis draws on archival material and extends arguments made by other scholars. While the book could have provided a wider analysis, it is a valuable contribution to the study of the Irish revolutionary period. [Extracted from the article]
