Abstract
This article critically analyzes Buchi Emecheta’s novel *The Bride Price* through feminist and postcolonial perspectives to explore how tradition, culture, and gender inequality intersect in Igbo society. It focuses on the bride price system as a cultural practice that commodifies women, reinforcing patriarchal norms that limit female autonomy and agency. The study highlights the protagonist Akunna’s resistance to these oppressive structures, illustrating the tension between individual self-determination and societal expectations rooted in tradition. By situating the novel within African gender studies and feminist discourse, the research underscores its role as both cultural critique and advocacy for gender justice and societal transformation in Nigeria.
