Abstract

Marika Takanishi Knowles' book explores the evolution of the stock theatrical character Pierrot in various art forms from the late 17th century to 1945 in France. Pierrot's representation in social, cultural, and art historical contexts is analyzed, focusing on his appearances in theatres and marketplaces.
