Abstract

The article reviews two recent opera productions in Japan: Wagner’s *Tristan und Isolde* at the New National Theatre Tokyo (NNTT) and Mozart’s *Così fan tutte* by the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy. The *Tristan und Isolde* production, conducted by Kazushi Ono and directed by David McVicar, marked the opera’s return to NNTT after 13 years, featuring a youthful lead duo and a night-themed staging. The Seiji Ozawa Music Academy, an educational project founded to support young Asian musicians, presented *Così fan tutte* under conductor Diego Matheuz, showcasing a strong ensemble of emerging singers alongside experienced artists. Both productions were noted for their musical clarity, thoughtful direction, and the continuation of artistic legacies in Japan’s operatic scene.
