Abstract

This article analyzes how Tim O'Brien's novel *The Things They Carried* challenges traditional gender norms surrounding the Vietnam War by portraying the complex roles of women in contrast to the masculine identities of male soldiers. It examines three female characters—Martha, who represents the distant woman back home influencing Lieutenant Cross's psyche; Kathleen, O'Brien's daughter, whose innocence and ignorance highlight generational and experiential gaps; and Mary Anne, whose transformation from outsider to active Green Beret disrupts conventional gender expectations in war. The article situates these portrayals within the broader context of patriarchy and psychological dynamics of masculinity during the Vietnam War, illustrating how women's presence and femininity profoundly affect soldiers' experiences and reveal male insecurities.
