Abstract
The article explores the dual nature of humanity, highlighting the tension between selfishness and altruism as it relates to social structures and cooperation. It discusses how early humans evolved to combat internal threats, such as selfish individuals, leading to the development of a "cultural immune system" that promotes cooperation and mitigates Machiavellian tendencies. The author argues that while humans are not inherently egalitarian, cultural practices and norms can foster cooperation, especially in small communities. The piece emphasizes the importance of understanding this duality to address modern societal inequalities and suggests that education and the adoption of cooperative norms can strengthen societal resilience against opportunistic behaviors.
