Abstract

The article explores the genealogical background of Sherlock Holmes, focusing on his connection to the Vernet family, a lineage originally French but which established an English branch known as the Verners. It traces this lineage through Livio Vernet, a civil servant who likely relocated to England in the late 18th century, and Marguerite Emilie, an accomplished artist and Holmes’s great-great-grandmother, whose artistic talent is suggested to have influenced Holmes’s deductive skills. The narrative also touches on Violet, a governess fluent in French, who married Holmes Senior, leading to the birth of the consulting detective. This genealogical account aims to contextualize Holmes’s family history within broader cultural and historical movements between France and England.
