Abstract
This article examines the interrelations among intelligence, wisdom, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Artificial Wisdom (AW), emphasizing their cognitive, communicative, and action-oriented dimensions. It distinguishes intelligence as the capacity for choice and problem-solving without inherent ethical constraints, whereas wisdom is characterized by prudence, harmony, and a broader, integrative perspective aimed at conflict resolution and well-being. The concept of Artificial Wisdom (AW) is introduced as AI systems explicitly designed to promote harmony and conflict resolution, contrasting with AI applications that may propagate manipulation or dyssocial behaviors. The article reviews historical and contemporary approaches to wisdom generation, including the Sumerian dialog-dialectic tradition, the illeism paradigm for wise reasoning, De Bono’s design-wisdom emphasizing practical harmony, and Protagoras’s Strict Nominalism, which frames wisdom as socially constructed and context-dependent. It further discusses applications of wisdom in basic conflict resolution, defensive strategies against manipulative conflicts (e.g., in social media and organizational settings), and the use of conflict to stimulate creativity and cooperation. The article concludes by highlighting the critical challenge of developing diverse forms of AW that support human and cultural wisdom without dehumanizing or subordinating individuals to machines, stressing the need for cautious, ethically informed integration of AI and AW in society.
