Abstract

The article focuses on Jonathan Edwards' theological understanding of human identity as fundamentally relational, grounded in the doctrine of the Trinity. Edwards identifies the human person as created in the imago Dei (image of God), reflecting the relational nature of the divine Persons who exist in eternal "consent and harmony," which he interprets as pure acts of love. This relationality, damaged by sin, is restored through redemption by the Holy Spirit, enabling believers to participate in the divine love and unity exemplified within the Trinity. Edwards’ analysis highlights that human personhood and its capacity for love are derived from and modeled on the intra-Trinitarian relationships, with redemptive history aimed at rehabilitating this relational harmony.
