Abstract

The article analyzes a key scene in Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel *The Brothers Karamazov*, focusing on the encounter between Ivan Karamazov and a devilish visitor in the chapter titled "Ivan's Nightmare." This devil is portrayed as a congenial, once-powerful gentleman who subtly manipulates Ivan, a proud and intellectually cynical character struggling with depression and spiritual denial. The devil’s agreeable demeanor contrasts with traditional depictions of evil, illustrating how evil often appears attractive or trustworthy to ensnare individuals. The analysis highlights how this interaction deepens understanding of evil’s psychological complexity and its capacity to exploit human vulnerabilities.
