Abstract

The article discusses how philosopher and mathematician Isaac Newton became the focus of the satirical attacks of writer Jonathan Swift. Topics explored include how the absent-mindedness of Newton served as inspiration for the characters known as Flappers in Swift's novel "Gulliver's Travels," the attitude of Swift towards natural philosophers and inventors, and the criticisms directed by Swift to the political views of Newton.
