Abstract
This article focuses on the life, literary career, and political engagement of Mario Vargas Llosa (1936–2025), a prominent Peruvian-Spanish writer and key figure of the Latin American Boom. Vargas Llosa’s early novels, such as *La ciudad y los perros* and *Conversación en La Catedral*, are noted for their narrative complexity and critical portrayal of Peruvian society, while later works like *La fiesta del Chivo* address authoritarianism and political violence. Politically active, he shifted from leftist beginnings to classical liberalism, opposing authoritarian regimes including Alberto Fujimori’s government in Peru. Beyond fiction, Vargas Llosa was an influential public intellectual and advocate for democratic values, whose legacy includes fostering Spanish-language literature through mentorship and the Mario Vargas Llosa Novel Prize. His death in 2025 marks the end of an era for Spanish-language literature, but his extensive body of work continues to be significant.
