Abstract

This article examines the role of the sacred in René Descartes' philosophical method, focusing on how Descartes deliberately exempted his faith in God from his systematic doubt as an example of "sacred reasoning." It argues that sacred beliefs function with distinct logical structures characterized by separation (being set apart from profane or ordinary reasoning) and security (providing a stable foundation amid uncertainty). By analyzing Descartes' methodic doubt and his treatment of God as a transcendent, unquestionable premise, the article highlights how sacred ideals shape reasoning processes rather than merely serving as objects of reasoning. The discussion extends to contemporary moral and political discourse, illustrating how sacred values continue to influence public argumentation, especially in pluralistic societies where the separation and integration of sacred beliefs in public reasoning remain contested.
